Good girl...or...

Had a doctor's appointment this morning and came out in a bit of a sad, tired, depressed mood... If I'm a good girl I should now stop eating all products with gluten (pasta, pizza, bread, couscous...you name it), with milk (cheese, yoghurt, ice cream...), with yeast which regretfully seems to include not only vinegar and I don't mind eating salads but not without vinegar :( and all alcohols... Well at least according to the doctor - but I think that I will have to research this last bit a bit further... so either I continue eating as normal and will probably, in a few years, have to start taking some kind of awful pill for the rest of my life or I become a good girl and decide to eliminate all the products mentioned above and hopefully my body will regulate itself, but probably I'll still have to take the same pill... what to do? I could go without milk and gluten products although it will be a pain since it makes your life very inflexible since most restaurants becomes a no no. No wine or vinegar will be more difficult though... and part of my life will become really boring... Perhaps I will try to do my best, and maybe cheat at some moments and hope for the best...

No wonder then that I felt like getting some nice sun flowers on my way to work to try to cheer me up a bit and bring in at least some sun in my life :)

What would be the most difficult food stuff for you to give up?

what about:
1- doing the possible reasonable effort to start with...
2- check for results (after some time)
3- adapt accordingly.

Thank you 'anonymous' for your suggestions :) I will probably try it out, it can't be worse than doing nothing despite the doc's insistence that I should follow the diet to 100%, but better 90% than nil :)

hi helena,
such a large diet seems very "louche" to me.
1. for the gluten: did your doc do blood tests, and confirm that you have coeliac disease? If yes, you should have an endoscopy and really stick to the diet in order not to have serious complications later on.
2. for the dairy: did your doc do a breath test for lactose intolerance? otherwise, no interest in not having dairy products (unless you have coeliac disease).
3. for the yeast: ??? don't get the point of it.
My advice: ask your doctor about all that, and if it's still weird, go to someone else.
until then: enjoy! :-)

Hi Eva, I agree that the diet seems a bit exaggerated and although I can see the need to exclude gluten since it seems to be often linked to problems with thyroiditis and iron deficiency (both of which I regretfully have), and possibly to exclude lactose products at least in the beginning as I’ve read that it's good to have a break from it for the first 3 months or so of a gluten free diet, i'm not sure that I understand the alcohol and vinegar restriction.

I have not had any tests for any of the products - it's more the linkage between gluten and thyroiditits and iron deficiency which was the base for the recommendations. I am planning to go to a specialist when home in Sweden next week or the week after to get a second advice.

And in the meantime, I will start enjoying at least alcohol and vinegar again :))

thank you!
